What are "Source Materials" on Open Chat Studio?

"Source Materials" refers to a feature within Open Chat Studio that allows you to provide specific content, information, or data which the chatbot can use as a reference or knowledge base. This is particularly useful for LLM-based chatbots, as it helps tailor the chatbot’s responses to be more aligned with your specific needs or the theme of the chatbot.

How to Use Source Materials for LLM-based Chatbots

Content Integration: You can integrate specific documents or text into the chatbot. This could be information on a given health area in an FAQs format, program-specific data, or any other relevant content that you want your chatbot to reference.
Contextual Relevance: By providing this material, you're essentially giving the chatbot a more focused and relevant context to operate within. This means your chatbot can provide more accurate and tailored responses based on the Source Materials you've provided.
Updating Information: Keep your Source Materials up-to-date. As you update program materials (for example guidelines for counselling or home visits), updating your Source Materials will help ensure your chatbot remains relevant and effective.

Best Practices for Using Source Materials

Relevance and Accuracy: Ensure the materials are relevant to the conversations your chatbot will engage in.
Organization and Structure: Well-organized Source Materials make it easier for the chatbot to retrieve and use the information. It's useful to structure your content in a clear, concise manner, with appropriate labels for different sections.

3 Steps for Incorporating Source Materials in your OCS Chatbot

There are 3 steps to ensure that your chatbot utilises the source material you would like it to.

#1 Select the "Source Materials" feature on the left-hand menu and select "add new". Add your source material here, keeping in mind the guidance above.

#2 Reference the source material in your prompt: Ensure that the prompt includes instructions to reference the source material. Often, you might like to ensure that the prompt sticks only to given source material.

Source Material

When utilising source material:

"All your information and questions should come from your Source Material."

"Your source material is {source_material}".

Note that the text above will enable the bot to directly reference the content you've added to the Source Material page on OCS.

#3 Select the relevant Source Material when creating your chatbot experiment: Ensure that you have selected the right source material from the drop-down menu (and the right prompt!) when creating your chatbot.
