CommCare Companion (Beta)

The CommCare Companion is an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist users in navigating and utilizing CommCare more efficiently. Whether you need help with case management, app building, data collection, or navigating settings, the CommCare Companion can provide real-time guidance, answer questions, and offer tips to improve your app building experience. It’s a convenient tool that helps you access information instantly while working in CommCare.

How to Enable the CommCare Companion

  1. Navigate to your Project Settings page.

  2. Go under the Project Administration tab and click on the Feature Preview option.

  3. Find the CommCare Companion option, review the consent text, and if you agree, select the checkbox and click on the enable button.

  4. Click on Update Previews.

Using the CommCare Companion

  • Once enabled, a chat icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

  • Click on the chat icon at any time to open the CommCare Companion.

  • Start your conversation by typing your question or request.

  • The CommCare Companion will respond with relevant answers or guidance to assist you.

Using files to get better help

You can upload files directly in your conversation with the CommCare Companion to help it better understand your question. This is especially useful when you have questions about your own CommCare application—for example, you can download your Application Summary from CommCare HQ, upload it to the bot, and ask questions about your app’s structure, forms, or case behavior. The bot will use the contents of the uploaded file to provide more contextual guidance, though it cannot make changes to your app or access your project space.

Limitations

  • The bot is focused on answering text-based questions and providing guidance within CommCare - complex workflows or tasks requiring human intervention may need to be handled separately.

Examples of Questions You Can Ask

Here are some examples of what you can ask the CommCare Companion:

  • "How do I create a new case in CommCare?"

  • "Can you walk me through the form builder?"

  • "How do I configure a repeat group to allow multiple entries?"

  • "How do I configure my Registration form to capture the attendance of my beneficiaries?"

  • "How do I link multiple forms to a single case?"

  • “I am receiving this error when registering a new case: “The case sharing settings for your user are incorrect. This user must be in exactly one case-sharing group. Please contact your supervisor.” How can I resolve this?”

Data Security and Use

CommCare Companion is trained exclusively on our publicly available wiki content. It does not have access to any CommCare project data unless that data is explicitly sent within a chat session by a user.

You should not upload or enter any personally identifiable information (PII) or protected health information (PHI) into the chatbot. If you choose to do so, you do so at your own risk.

Our team may analyze chat transcriptions to enhance the bot's functionality and user experience.
